League Board Authorizes Staff to Implement Plans to Challenge AB 1484, Redevelopment Budget Trailer Bill

Meeting in Manhattan Beach today, the League board of directors unanimously authorized the commencement of litigation in the League's name on behalf of the cities of California to challenge the constitutional validity of AB 1484, the controversial state budget trailer bill that authorizes the state Department of Finance to "claw-back" voter-approved city sales taxes and city property taxes to satisfy the state's funding demands imposed on legally separate redevelopment successor agencies by AB 1484. The authorization covered possible intervention in an action filed by member city/cities or successor agency/agencies or the filing of a separate legal action.

League Board of Directors Adopts Resolution Congratulating Cities for Continuing to Adhere to All Provisions in the Brown Act Despite State’s Decision to Suspend Certain Requirements for Fiscal Reasons

Calls on the Legislature to Abide by Similar Transparency Provisions

At its meeting in Manhattan Beach today, the board of directors of the League of California Cities adopted a resolution congratulating cities for their continued faithful compliance with the requirements of the Ralph M. Brown Act even though the Legislature has suspended several of its provisions for three years.

Five Resolutions Submitted for Annual Conference

This year, the League of California Cities received five resolutions on topics including emergency preparedness, revenue collection, and environmental protection laws.

League Partner Program to Host Free Disaster Preparedness Webinar on Aug. 1

In December 2011, much of Southern California was hit with record wind storms that uprooted trees, downed power lines and cut off city services. The League Partner Program is holding a webinar that will examine the lessons learned from this disaster in the areas of disaster communications, staff and community training, inter-agency cooperation, and emergency operations management.
