Caucus Elects Sen. Toni Atkins to be Next Senate Leader

Full Floor Vote to Happen March 21

January 10, 2018
The Senate Democratic Caucus on Jan. 9 elected Sen. Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) Senate president pro tempore. The full Senate will vote on March 21.

When elected, Sen. Atkins will become the first California legislator to serve both as Assembly speaker and Senate president pro tem in close to 150 years. The senator served as speaker from May 2014 to March 2016.

“The League of California Cities congratulates Senate President pro Tempore Elect Toni Atkins. The cities of California have a long history of working with her on policies and issues of great importance to local governments including affordable housing, economic development and infrastructure financing. We appreciate how she brings her experience as a former San Diego Council Member to how she approaches legislation affecting cities statewide. It will be an honor to work with Senator Atkins as she steps into her new role as leader this spring,” said League President and South San Francisco Council Member Rich Garbarino.

In 2017, Sen. Atkins authored SB 2, a bill the League supported and Gov. Jerry Brown signed as part of the housing package that will generate hundreds of millions of dollars annually for affordable housing, emergency shelters and other housing needs. While in the Assembly, the League worked with her on numerous bills including those on affordable housing, economic development and transportation infrastructure.
