The League of California Cities® released the following statement from Executive Director Carolyn Coleman on the Tax Fairness, Transparency and Accountability Act of 2018:
“The measure is a harmful initiative that would drastically limit the ability of local agencies to fund essential core services like public safety, healthcare, libraries, parks, and infrastructure in their communities, and we support its withdrawal. At the same time, while many aspects of SB 872 are distasteful because it would preempt the ability for cities and other local agencies from levying any new tax, fee or assessment on groceries and soda for 12 years, we recognize that the legislation must be compared with the potential passage of the more onerous initiative. “
Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
