President José Cisneros Honored as a 2013 Public Official of the Year

League of California Cities President José Cisneros has received the prestigious honor of being named one of, and California’s only, Governing Magazine’s 2013 Public Officials of the Year.

City Spotlight: San José Opens Renewable Energy Facility

The City of San José announced this week the opening of the world’s largest dry fermentation anaerobic digestion facility. The facility officially opens today, Friday Nov. 22, and is the first facility of its kind in the entire country.

It’s not too early to register for the League’s the New Mayors and Council Members Academy, scheduled Jan. 22–24 at the Sheraton Grand Sacramento. Curriculum for the event features tools to help recently elected officials begin their term with confidence and knowledge about their new position and responsibilities.

Outstanding Local Streets and Roads Project Awards Program Calls for Nominations

Applications due Jan. 31

Cities and counties can now submit nominations for the Outstanding Local Streets and Roads Project Awards Program. Sponsored by the League of California Cities, California State Association of Counties (CSAC), and County Engineers Association of California (CEAC), the awards program recognizes and raises awareness of the exceptional achievements made by cities and counties to preserve and protect the local street and road system.

ILG Interested in Learning about Your City’s Recycling Infrastructure

As part of a new project related to the financing and siting of recycling programs and infrastructure, the Institute for Local Government (ILG) is conducting a short survey to better understand:
 
·         How local agencies finance the staff and administrative functions of their solid waste and recycling programs;
·         How local agencies and the private sector finance recycling infrastructure and recycled content manufacturing facilities; and
·         Best practices and lessons learned related to siting and planning for recycling infrastructure and recycled content manufacturing facilities.

City Land Water Conservation Fund Grants Available

The California Department of Parks and Recreation is offering Land Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grants to cities for acquisition, development and maintenance of outdoor park and recreation facilities.

California Arts Council Supports Creating New Programs with One-Time Grant Funds

The California Arts Council voted this week in Los Angeles to support of five new programs and initiatives to be funded by one-time support from the California State Assembly.
